Description

This a photograph of the Historic City Hall in Springfield. In the mid western state of Missouri. I have painstakingly removed the streetlights, road and cars from the shot to create a more aesthetic appearance, without any distractions from the beautiful architectural details of the building. It houses an historic museum for Springfield and Green county Mo. So I decided to add information about the museum instead of just a blanket architecture description. The description gives a web address to the sight from whence I gathered this information. Wonderful for any wall in your home or office or perhaps a greeting card. Mission Statement
To facilitate and encourage the use of history to define local identity within the framework of larger historical texts. To accomplish this objective, the Museum shall endeavor to document the history of Springfield and Greene County, Missouri, and their people through the collection, preservation, and exhibition of historical objects and their research and interpretation.

Historic Site
The History Museum for Springfield-Greene County is housed on the 3rd floor of the old Springfield City Hall Building, located at the northeast corner of Chestnut Expressway & Boonville. This National Register Historic Site celebrates 115 years of history. Built in 1894 at a cost of $133,000, this magnificent stone structure served as the U.S. Customs House & Post Office when Springfield was a city of 22,000 people. A Federal Courthouse was added in 1913. From 1938 to 1992, the building was home to the Springfield City Government. For seven decades, it has witnessed the major decisions that shaped & molded Springfield into our city of today. It is truly an appropriate site for the History Museum with its expanding collections & exhibits.

Museum Features
The Museum houses a Permanent Exhibit featuring various themes: Native American, Pioneer Life, Civil War, Victorian Era, World Wars I & II, Business & Commerce, and the Ozarks Jubilee. Hands-on areas for children are included throughout the exhibit.

Research
The Museum￿s extensive Archives are an invaluable resource to area researchers, housing over 30,000 photographs, 100,000 artifacts, papers, and other historical items and information. The Archives are open by appointment.

Collections & Artifacts
The Collections housed in the Museum cover every facet of life from the earliest human occupation in southwest Missouri to the present day. Through the year, special exhibits are drawn from the collections for the rotating exhibit galleries to tell our area￿s story.

The large costume and textile collection contains clothing and accessories from 1830 to the present as well as many quilts, coverlets and linens. The artifact collection contains approximately 100,000 historic items including antique china, household items, furniture, and office equipment. These are carefully maintained and preserved to use in exhibits and education.

Education/Outreach
The Museum maintains a strong tie to the youth of the community by creating hands-on experiences. There is a series of eight Trunk Tours available to schools, organizations, care facilities, and other groups. A trained Educator is available to present these trunks or they can be checked out to be used by on-site educators. The topics presented are: Pioneer Experience (1830-1860); Civil War (1860-1865); Turn of the Century (1890-1910); WWII (1936-1945); Local Native American History; Lewis & Clark; Greene County Local History & Government. PowerPoint presentations are also available. A favorite is called ￿Then & Now￿, Springfield as it was and is now.
